About Us

This is certainly the season to see many of these shapes in the
world around us and the children eagerly played “I Spy Shapes” around our
school. We also read “Mary’s Baby”, a wonderful children’s book about the
Nativity, and the children were eager to re-enact the story in the dramatic
play room as well as with the various Nativity sets available around our
school. Needless to say, the children are very excited about the Christmas
preparations going on in their homes and are eager to tell us all about what
they have been doing to get ready for Christmas. This week we will visit
the sanctuary and hear the wondrous story again in this quiet and reverent
setting. Watching the children’s angelic faces as they listen to the story
is a treasured moment for all the teachers.
At
our small group time this month the children honed their fine motor skills
and experimented with sequence and patterns as they threaded small beads of
red, green, and “ice” color onto pipe cleaners.
This activity requires
persistence and patience, especially for the younger children. Once
finished, the children bent the pipe cleaners into a candy cane or circle
shape and proudly talked about hanging their creations on the Christmas
trees or giving them to family members as a present.
For the month of December the Dramatic
Playroom has been transformed into a truly “living” Nativity.
We have set up a wooden stable frame and covered it with a brown
cloth. The children can sit inside the stable as they
re-enact the story of our Savior’s birth. There is a small
wooden crib for the baby “Jesus” doll, who is wrapped in a
receiving blanket and lovingly cared for by his parents.
We have costumes and head-dresses for Mary

and Joseph to wear. There are also shepherd
costumes and several stuffed sheep. There are many angel
costumes for
our
many angels, complete with haloes and wings. The angels can be
seen and heard floating about the school, spreading the good news
that “Jesus is born, Jesus is born!” There are several royal
costumes and crowns for the kings to wear as they travel to visit
the baby, bringing gold-painted boxes bedecked with plastic “jewels”
and filled with “gold” coins or incense. Several books are
available to help recall the story. There are also two plastic
manger sets for the children to play with. One is a “Little People”
set which the children love to arrange and re-arrange, and the other
is a talking manger that tells the story and plays Christmas carols.
The math and computer
centers which are located in the Dramatic Playroom have not been set up
during the living Nativity. However, there are several challenging
Christmas puzzles for the children to work with on the table normally
reserved for a math activity.
The children have been very busy of late creating their
Christmas gifts for you. Without divulging too much
information, suffice it to say they have been immersed in a
three-week multi-step ongoing project! This holiday craft
elicited a great deal of reflective conversation along with a
heaping dose of anticipation. Gluing began the process followed
by color and shape selection. Color choice was next as the
children applied glittery paint from a
palette
consisting of silver, red, and gold. This completed the initial
stages of the project. The finishing touch included some
further decision-making and fine motor skills with the aid of
tape to seal this project with
