designs. A large
plastic star and circle mold were added for additional design options.
Music is the theme
this week, and cans, pans and elastic bands (sounds musical already) are
the featured instruments at the Science Center. The
children
were surprised to learn
that they could
create an array of musical tones with a simple strumming of elastic
bands. Birds will be the next subject as we transform the science table
with nests, binoculars and books pertaining to these fascinating
animals. This will complete the month of March and with it, we hope
spring is just around the corner.
The Dramatic
Playroom has changed from housekeeping to a hospital. This has been a
big hit for the children! Role playing has been a favorite in here. We
didn’t realize that we had so many doctors and nurses among us! The
children are
learning how to take care of each other as well as play cooperatively
with one another. They have
enjoyed dressing the part with all the hospital attire and medical
bags. The children have been able to experience walking with crutches,
using a cane, and being wheeled around in a wheel chair, as well as hear
one’s heart beat, take blood pressure, wrap bandages, and give shots.
During “doctor” week we enjoyed singing songs about “An Ache in my
Head”, “Them Dry Bones” and “The Sneezing |
|
Song”. Our
multi-cultural theme provided lots of fun music and new words as we sang
“The World is Big, the World is Small”, “Jambo” (“means ‘Hello’ to
Jesus, your best friend”),
“Little
Brown Gal”, a Hawaiian song, and “YOW!” (“people use different words in
France, Japan and Spain, but everyone, even me, says the same thing when
in pain”)! The children also loved singing and clapping to the
“Mexican Hand Clapping Song”, and realizing that clapping is the same in
any language.
Child (while making
a necklace with wooden beads at the sensory table): “Can I take my
necklace home to show my mom?”
Miss Maryann: “Yes, you can bring it home and then bring it back
again to keep in the table.”
Child: “Yes! You read my mind!”
Child (while talking
about being weighed and measured at the doctor’s office): “My Dad
weighs me on the wall.”
Miss Brenda: “We
have chicken nuggets for snack. Do you like them?”
Child: “Yes! I have them at Old MacDonald’s!”
Child:
“My brother told me that a square is a new kind of rectangle.”
Child, upon arriving
and seeing photographers set up: “I’m looking extra handsome
today!”
