GOOD SHEPHERD NURSERY SCHOOL
November

We’re sure you heard from
your children all about our visit to the Medway Fire Station. Firefighter
Joe MacDougall helped us cross the street. Once we got there, he talked
with the children about fire safety and showed us all the special clothes
that firefighters wear, including the heavy jacket and pants, boots, face
mask, oxygen tank, and fire helmet. The children were excited to be able to
try on some of the clothes. In the garage, he showed us the fire engines
and the children were thrilled to go inside two of the fire trucks.
Firefighter Chris Mele (Jillian’s dad) joined the Primary-2 and Pre-K2
children. During his presentation to the children, Firefighter Joe asked the
children to tell you that:
|
 |
- You should sit
down as a family and discuss two fire escape routes within your
home, and you should make sure that you can crawl along these
routes in case of smoke.
- You should
designate a special meeting place outside of the house.
- You should
check your smoke detectors to make sure they work. Let your
children listen to the alarm so they become familiar with the
sound. Replace the batteries each year.
|
He also talked about the
importance of not playing with lighters and matches, and what to do if your
clothing should catch fire: STOP, DROP and ROLL. As always, Firefighter Joe
did a wonderful job of informing the children about fire safety.
During fire safety week, we
also conducted our first fire drill. The children were very responsive in
following the directions given them about our procedure to exit the school.
We’ll continue to conduct fire drills once each month, and weather permitting,
will also go outside during one of the drills so the children will become
familiar with what would happen if we actually had to leave the building.

The children really
enjoyed our “counting” theme, and had fun counting numerous items from
around our school including pennies, nickels, and dimes (from our
grocery store in the dramatic playroom),
crayons, buttons, leaves, and even the stripes on their shirts! In
keeping with our theme of counting and number recognition, we did
several dot-to-dot pictures during small group time. Our next weekly
theme was rhyming words. We read some silly nursery rhymes, and the
children then took turns coming up with rhyming words of their own.

As Thanksgiving approaches, this week we will talk
about our families. The children love to tell us all about who is in
their family and the fun things they do together. We will also talk
about the many things that we are grateful for, and how we can thank God
for our abundant blessings. Our next small group activity will be a
cooking project. You will get to taste the delicious results at our
Thanksgiving celebration! We will end the month of November with
another favorite theme – transportation. We plan to list as many
different modes of transportation as we can think of, and classify them
by whether they transport us on land, air, or water.
