Upcoming Events Important Information Gathering in Small Groups: Circle Time, Small Group Time, and Story Time Gathering the children together in small groups allows teachers to integrate language and cognitive activities while also nourishing children’s social selves. Children learn to do many things during these times as they gather together in an enjoyable way. They learn to focus their attention, to listen while others speak, to participate in discussions, to control wiggly impulses, and to keep themselves from being distracted by rambunctious neighbors. Teachers carefully plan and prepare for these small group times, yet they maintain flexibility in order to move with the children’s ideas. Teachers provide “key experiences” in this social setting and observe each child as they participate in their own individual style. As a parent, it is natural to want to observe your child in this setting. However, it is our experience that the children are easily distracted by the presence of parents and/or siblings during small group times. All the children behave differently than they do with just their teachers present, and this makes it extremely difficult for teachers to conduct small group activities. While we maintain our open-door policy, and you may attend small group times if you wish to, we would like you to consider the impact of your presence on the children and the teachers. If you want to know how your children are doing at small group times, the teachers are more than willing to share this information with you. We hope you understand that while we understand your desire to be present during these times, we would prefer that you allow the teachers and children to experience small group times without the added distraction of visitors. We welcome your presence during free play and gross motor times! Parent Information Night We were pleased to see a fairly large group of parents for our Parent Information Night. We hope you found the evening both informative and enjoyable, and would appreciate any feedback you would care to give. If you were unable to attend, and would like the text of the presentations on social skills, curriculum, the value of play, and the process of art, please let me know. I have included an article in the newsletter this month about “How to Talk to Children About Their Art.” I hope you find it useful. Winter Approaches! Before we know it, winter will be here. I’d like to remind you to review our inclement weather policy in your parent handbook. In addition, we have found it very useful for the children to keep a pair of slippers here at school. That way, you won’t have to remember to pack sneakers or slippers on the days that your child wears rain or snow boots. They also come in handy if your child’s shoes get wet at the water table. If you choose to send in a pair of slippers, please mark them clearly with your child’s name. Parent and Child This year, GSNS is providing you with a complimentary copy of Scholastic’s “Parent and Child” magazine each month. We hope you enjoy it. At the end of the year, I will be polling parents to see if you think we should continue the subscription. Dismissal Time I’m sure you’ve noticed that the line of cars at dismissal time is moving much more quickly! The idea for our “high tech” approach using two-way radios can be laid at the feet of Miss Nancy. Thanks, Nancy!! Miss Kelly was kind enough to lend us some radios to try out before we committed to purchasing our own. Food Pantry Medway Village Church provides food for needy families through a weekly Food Pantry. If you would like to contribute grocery items to the Pantry, please send items in your child’s school bag. There is always a need for packaged snacks appropriate for packed school lunches. Any contribution you make would be greatly appreciated! Operation Christmas Child Medway Village Church has participated in this event for several years. Shoebox-sized containers filled with toys and gifts are sent to children all over the world who are refugees, disaster survivors, or victims of poverty. Collection time will run from October 30 through November 13 to enable processing and shipment in time for Christmas. If you would like to contribute to this event, please contact me for more details. Please keep in mind that GSNS will be participating in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Project in December. Prayer Support Amy Blenkhorn (mom of Lindsey, Primary-2) is committed to supporting GSNS through prayer. If you are interested in joining her, please contact her at (508) 533-9319. Part-Time Day Care I have several GSNS parents interested in providing part-time day care. Please contact me if you are interested. Tuition Payments Thank you so much for making your tuition payments on time. GSNS is supported almost entirely by tuition, and we rely on these payments in order to pay our teachers and purchase needed supplies. Miss Cathy |
