We hope you enjoyed
the field trip to Tougas Farm. We were blessed with beautiful weather on th e
first day and the rain held off on the second, so our guardian angels were
indeed with us! We like this trip because the children are able to so do much.
The bus ride is always exciting, and all the children seemed to enjoy the
playground, the farm animals, and the hayride. Picking apples from short trees
and choosing a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch are great hands-on experiences for
the children. Many of the children told us that they baked apple pies or apple
crisp and we all agreed that the apples were yummy!
Fall is such an awesome time of year, bringing with it the excitement of
starting school and providing us with so many
wonderful topics to discuss at circle and story times! We have praised
God for the beauty of fall colors,
talked
about apples, pumpkins and farm animals, and enjoyed making predictions
about and then
reviewing our trip to Tougas farm. Our September circle times included
singing songs to learn each other's names, practicing the proper method
of hand-washing (which is so important in pre-school), and discussing
school rules such as using "walking feet", "indoor voices" and
"listening ears." We used puppets to help us learn about friendship,
including how to approach a new friend, what words to use if conflict
should arise, etc. Learning and practicing appropriate social skills is
an ongoing, integral part of preschool. Being able to sit on a
designated space, listen, and wait your turn to talk at circle time is
also a gradual learning process that we work on all
year long. We also use circle time to explain
the different centers in our school which change every two weeks,
providing new opportunities to |

explore. We have
started using Planning Boards to help the children think about and
choose where they'd like to start their day, and Job Charts. Each child
has a job to do each day, including "line leader", "book collector",
putting out the "carpet shapes", and the coveted job of "feeding the
guinea pig".
We
also do “show and tell” during circle time, providing another
opportunity to practice speaking in front of a group, or being a polite
listener. We end our day with story time, just prior to going down to
the large playroom for gross motor. The story usually compliments and
encourages more discussion about our weekly theme.
While all of the children in both the Pre-K and Primary classes are
together during free play time (9:30-10:40), we have split the classes
into smaller groups of 6 or 7 children for circle, story, and small
group times. Circle and story groups will remain consistent throughout
the school year, and the three Primary Class teachers (Miss Kelly, Miss
Chris, Miss Julie –P1 or Miss Brenda, Miss Maryann, Miss Nancy -P2) will
rotate, having the opportunity to be with each group for two weeks at a
time.
